My Love for Lychees!

One of the few things that can alleviate anxieties, find peace and inspiration, is nature in all its forms. At home in Sweden, it is the beautiful archipelago and forest, while down here in the Mediterranean area, I can never get tired of the beautiful beaches, the desert and the wide range of amazing fruit orchards.

Only since I moved to Israel have I started to eat fruit according to the seasons, which I was never as much aware of in Sweden where most fruits you buy are imported. In Israel, on the contrary, the country is completely self-sufficient when it comes to fruits and vegetables.

As Corona rages all over the country, and we are not allowed to gather on the beaches, it is perfect to get out into nature by going to various orchards that offer self-picking. For instance to the large lychee plantation, with self-picking, below the mountain where we live. Lychees being one of my absolute summer fruit favorites, along with mango and watermelon. The plantation is located in northwestern Galilee, less than 10 minutes to the Mediterranean Sea, one of Israel’s most beautiful beaches and the Lebanese border.’

The lychee is native to SouthEast Asia, where the cultivation is said to have started in China, Vietnam and Malaysia for more than 1000 years ago. To Israel the lychee tree arrived during the 1930’s, however the commercial growth started first during the 1960’s

If you will ever be in Israel during the months of July and August, this is a place you should not miss out !!
