Six favorite sites to visit in the South of Sweden
I have received many questions about my favorite places worth visiting in southern Sweden, where I grew up, so here are six of my absolute top places. Places that always inspire me in new ways every time!
Kayaking, sailing or boating between the islands of Karlskrona’s Eastern Archipelago. Visit the seals on the southernmost island Utklippan, sail to Stenshamn-Utlängan or ride a bike out to Torhamn and take the car ferry over to Ytterön. Take the bike on the boat Axel from Karlskrona out to Nättraby and cycle back. Rent an SUP and paddle between the islands of Karlskrona’s inner archipelago or why not swim between? There are many choices in Karlskrona to create great summer memories for life.
The river where the Swedish King comes to inaugurate the fishing season every year. You do not even have to be a major fishing enthusiast to enjoy the beautiful nature around the river. I simply brought a picnic basket and a good book to enjoy while my boys fished. Also went for a short hike along the river.
A couple of minutes walking distance from Laxens Hus (the fishing center of the river, where both fishing licenses and fishing gear can be purchased) there is a smaller supermarket if you forgot to bring any picnic with you. Also, there is a cozy fish restaurant right next to Laxens hus, if you want to eat fish regardless if you caught a salmon or not.
During the guided tour of Absolut Vodka, in Åhus, you get to know the story behind the birth of one of the world’s most iconic liquor brands, as well as you find out who the bearded guy on the Absolut bottle really is. You will also learn to shake up a real Cosmopolitan!
Why? Because Ales Stenar is one of Sweden’s most mystical sites from the Viking Age.
Some people believe it is a burial monument while others think it’s an ancient astronomical calendar.
No one really knows who erected this megalithic monument around 1,400 years ago, or why.
Regardless, it’s a very special feeling to walk around between the 59 stones, placed in the shape of a ship, and think about what our ancestors really had in mind when erecting these stones more than 1000 years ago.
Why? If you love deciduous forests like I do, this national park is a must to visit. Either for shorter or longer hikes, or why not on a mountain bike?
Why? To learn more about apples and how a really tasty apple juice and/or apple cider are being produced. Before my first visit to Kivik’s cider factory, as an example, I did not know there are around 200 types of apples in Sweden.
